A Day In The Life Of An EC Student Part I
by Kristen Doll-Cosmetology

6:00 am the alarm goes off, as it has three days a week for the last ten months. There's no sense hitting the snooze button, those few extra minutes will turn to a few extra hours and then you are late!

The morning starts off to a slow start, small breakfast, a shower to wake you up, and at least three cups of coffee just to get a kick start. You now have to decide on what to wear! Your options are black, black, black, or black! Take your pick. It's now about 7:15 and it's time to head to school. As you are driving away, you realize, oh my gosh I forgot my student I.D.! The school day starts at 8:00 am sharp with a mandatory shampoo blow dry, on our mannequins who always wait with a smile, liking every look we give them. We will congregate in the beloved lunch room at breaks and lunch times where talks about last night's adventures, what happened on the Hills or the latest gossip. Unless a quiz or practical takes place then nervousness takes over with hearts pounding and repeated reviewing all the steps in our head.

You walk across the shiny, polished floor over to the awaiting clients. You look around to the group of hopeful faces eagerly awaiting a life changing service, you call out your client's name and she looks at you as if you are speaking Swahili. Until you greet her with a smile all the guest's nervousness lessens and you can begin to create your magic.

When clients aren't around, we have mannequins to work on. From perms, roller sets, pin curls, but my favorite one to hate is finger waves! My fingers just don't ever want to listen when I need to bend them in weird directions. When I get even one ridge in, it feels like a victory. Practice makes perfect though. Roller sets are always a fun one! They are slightly time consuming when it comes to those pin curls, but if you use enough gel, they won't go anywhere! Once that set is dry, you are left with a big old head of curly locks, it's time to get creative!! Updo's are always a popular alternative. When it's updo day at EvelineCharles, the bobby pins are usually flying, you could get lost in the back brushing.
...To be continued.
